Message from the President
As the President of the IMU, I am very pleased to welcome
you to our home on the Internet.
The IMU, founded in 1992, is Malaysia’s first private medical
educational institution. The University enjoys an international
reputation, and provides a high standard of education at the undergraduate
level. English is used at the University as the medium of instruction.
The University has always placed a high value on its undergraduate
studies. We have expanded our undergraduate programmes beyond
medical, pharmacy and nursing programmes to dentistry and health
sciences programmes.
We believe our courses to be progressive and innovative, and we strive to use best practice in their delivery and assessment. To keep in tandem with the introduction of these new programmes, the IMU has embarked on the expansion of its facilities at the Bukit Jalil campus. For many years we have upheld a proud record of funding for research, and we have established a solid reputation for research achievements in many different fields and across many different disciplines. This reputation has attracted talented teachers and students to the University, further enhancing the quality of our research. Research is important for teaching as teaching that is not grounded in research is not much better than mere speculation. IMU is very fortunate in that even as a private university, our research activities are strongly encouraged and generously funded. Researchers at IMU have had regular strategic planning sessions to identify areas for research emphasis for the last five years.
In addition, the University provides strong administrative support
for students who are seeking financial assistance from various
private and government sponsors. This is important to reflect
IMU’s image as a caring university for our students as well. We
also administer the IMU scholarships. Other financial assistance
provided to our student body include participation in interuniversity
co-curriculum activities, rental of sports facilities, facilitating
hostel accommodation as well as counselling services for students.
Student life in IMU is not just about study. Our students form
their own societies and clubs toorganise various co-curricular
activities. These include sports clubs, cultural and language
clubs, dance and music, photography and so on. We have newly renovated
the student lounge at the Bukit Jalil campus for various indoor
games and for relaxation. There is also a fully-equipped gymnasium
and a dance studio with apt sound system for all students to use.
In line with our aim to develop caring healthcare professionals,
the IMU students have been involvedin various community projects
including the “Kampung Angkat” project to provide health education,
health screening, and free tuition service to the orphanage, etc.
Medicine, dentistry and health sciences programmes have always
been interesting avenues to explore. There are many fascinating
courses that open up attractive career paths. I would like to
take this opportunity to advise students to carefully plan and
learn more about a particular profession before they pursue any
of these courses, in order to ensure a better future for themselves.
I encourage you to peruse our website and to visit it often. It
will take you on a fascinating online journey through the vibrant
and diverse university community that is the IMU.
