FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I read in the PGDID programme prospectus that this is a one-year full-time course. I have my own private practice. Will I be able to complete the course in one year?

Yes, as this programme has been designed with the working dental practitioner in mind. Dental practitioners who have registered for the course are guided and mentored to fulfill the requirements of the course in one year. However, those who may not be able to commit the time to fulfill the requirements will be provided an allowance to complete the requirements up to a period of three years.

You will receive guidance from successful specialist practitioners on how to prepare your clinic to provide implant treatment for your patients for successful fulfillment of course requirements. Alternatively, dental practitioners may select to partially or fully complete the clinical requirements at the IMU Oral Health Centre.

As this course is a national-approved programme, will I be considered a dental implant specialist?

Implant dentistry, like anywhere else in the world, is not considered a specialist discipline. However, the degree qualification can be added to your credentials to certify that you are trained through an approved university course to provide implant treatment.

What is the programme structure like?

There is a total of 6 modules in the course. There will be a compulsory 5-day block for each of the modules. These will be held in IMU whereby there will be face-to-face activities such as lectures, seminars, practical sessions (hands-on), case-based discussion etc. There will not be any patient treatment during these sessions. After the 5-day block, the remaining teaching/learning activities eg. seminars and case-based learning are conducted online and through web conferencing. Students will have the option of treating the clinical cases in IMU Oral Health Centre under direct supervision or in their own dental practice with initial direct supervision and later by distant supervision using a  video recording system. The length/duration of each module is approximately 6-8 weeks. The entire programme stretches over 43 weeks covering teaching/learning activities and examinations.

When does the course begin? Do you have tentative module dates for the compulsory attendance?

The programme begins with a programme orientation from the 19 October – 23 October. This will be followed by the commencement of the 5-day teaching/learning blocks as follows for the six modules:-

Module 1.        24 – 28 Oct 2016

Module 2.        28 Nov – 2 Dec 2016

Module 3.        15 – 19 Jan 2017

Module 4.        10 – 14 Apr 2017

Module 5.        8 – 12 May 2017

Module 6.        17 – 21 Jul 2017

Will I be eligible to get the Diploma in Implant Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since this programme is benchmarked to this qualification?

In order to be eligible to take the RCS Edinburgh examination for the Diploma in Implant Dentistry, after completion of the IMU PGDID course, candidates will meet the requirements of the RCS Edinburgh Diploma in Implant Dentistry examination with at least a one-year recall of their cases treated during the course. The IMU PGDID course have outcomes matched to the standards of the RCS Edinburgh with similar examination format. IMU plans to have the RCS Edinburgh Diploma in Implant Dentistry examination conducted in IMU to facilitate dental practitioners who are interested to have the extra RCS Edinburgh qualification. Candidates will need to pay the examination fees charged by the College.

What implant system will be used?

Students will be required to understand the rationale for the choice of implant systems. The PGDID programme is not system-based. We shall be teaching/exposing the students to implant systems with good research evidence of success that include Nobel Biocare and Zimmer.

Does IMU provide patients for clinical training?

Patients can be arranged upon request to be treated at the IMU Oral Health Centre.

If I am currently practising in another country, will I be able to treat patients at IMU?

Yes, as long as you fulfill our entry requirements, you will be able to treat patients in IMU as a postgraduate student under supervision.

If I need to treat my patients who require dental implants at IMU would that be possible? What will be the arrangement and costs for the patient?

Yes, it would be possible to bring your patient to be treated by you at IMU under staff supervision. There is no extra fee chargeable to you for treating patients at IMU. It is part of your course fees. However, the patient would need to pay for treatment according to reduced patient treatment fees of IMU Oral Health Centre for patients treated by postgraduate students.

What will be the arrangement and costs for patients treated in my own clinic?

You will initially need direct supervision for patients treated in your own clinic for dental implants and for more challenging cases. For this, IMU will arrange for suitable supervisors to be present in your clinic. There will be extra fees that you will need to pay to support the attendance of the supervisors in your clinic. The quantum will depend on the time spent, travel and accommodation needs (where necessary) for supervisors to be on site.

What is the application process? What is the deadline for the registration?

Acceptance of candidates into the programme is on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon submission of your online application (link provided above), applicants will be short-listed for an interview. Successful applicants will be notified within three working days.

How much are the fees and how can they be paid?

The course fee is RM55,000. For the first cohort of students a RM5,000 bursary will be given ie. students need to pay only RM50,000. Fees are paid in total upon acceptance into the course. A special payment option can be arranged where students can pay in four installments with RM20,000 upon registration and the remaining RM30,000 is paid in three bimonthly installments. The fees include the provision of a video-recording system that can be installed at the chairside to facilitate distant supervision.

Where can I apply to join the course?

The online application is available via this link.

“The primary objective of the IMU Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry is to provide dental practitioners the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills to plan, treat, and rehabilitate a range of simple to advance partially and fully edentulous patients using dental implants. The programme is designed to support the training and learning of working dental practitioners by using a flexible modular mode of delivery using a wide array of teaching methods supplemented with guidance from personal tutors. The training standards have been developed to ensure patient safety. The training will emphasise the need to provide a good standard of care based on current evidence in the field of Implant Dentistry.
