“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.” – Mahatma Gandhi
“Self-development is a higher duty than self-sacrifice.”
- Elizabeth Cady Stanton
University life is a major turning point for many students. Pursuing a degree which open doors to a new world. Whether it’s academic knowledge or meeting new people, learning to study in a new way or discovering more of one’s gifts and skills, it’s all a new process. This lifelong learning process comes with new responsibilities. We are required to make different decisions at different stages in life. It’s a stage in life where we can decide what our education will encompass. Is it just academic or both academic and self-development?

More on SDU
IMU Self Development Unit (IMU SDU), formerly known as the Counselling Unit, is under the Student Services Hub.
When we started off in 1992 as Malaysia’s first private medical college, offering medical degrees, one counsellor met the student needs. Besides providing counselling, the counsellor organised workshops for students and assisted in other administrative duties of the Student Affairs Department.
Today IMU has grown to become a university offering courses in both Medical and Health Sciences fields with 3 full-time counsellors, one part-time counsellor at Bukit Jalil (BJ) and one part-time counsellor at Seremban (SB). Counselling services are outsources at other clinical campuses.
We are proud to be able to grow and change with the times. Today the unit conducts various workshops with emphasis on self-development programmes for students and has two counselling rooms equipped with expressive art materials as a more creative and non-threatening way for self-discovery and understanding oneself.
IMU aims to be an innovative global centre of excellence in learning and research, supporting a community of scholars and professionals committed to serving society, promoting the development of students to reach their true potential in becoming competent, ethical, caring and inquiring citizens; and visionary leaders.
The IMU Self Development Unit contributes to this through its vision of “Journeying with Students to discover their Identity, Gifts and Potential.”
Besides this, the unit aims to provide professional guidance and counselling to enable students to understand and deal with social, behavioral and personal problems. This will develop them to be a more emotionally and psychologically stable healthcare professional who will contribute well to society.
