The IMU has established a Postgraduate Medical School. All postgraduate programmes in medical and health sciences are under the remit of the Postgraduate Medical School.

The Faculty has high teaching standards and attracts first-class teaching staff from Malaysia and abroad. It prides itself on the facilities and support it gives to students and on the calibre and dedication of its academic and clinical staff. The Faculty fosters a broad range of active research programmes in its campuses in Bukit Jalil and Seremban.

Much of its success in research and teaching results from the Faculty's capacity to attract external research funds. The IMU faculty has strong national and international connections and are involved in collaborative projects with other leading medical research institutions. Many staff have made major international contributions in their respective fields.

The university aims to contribute to the national goal of increasing the pool of scientists to meet the research needs of the country. The IMU has very experienced senior staff who will supervise the projects.

To date, more than RM1 million internal funds have been allocated for research every year. Research activities have increased substantially, especially in externally-funded collaborative research projects. Last year, the IMU was designated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia as a private university that is allowed to apply directly for and receiving research funds through the Intensification of Research in Priority Areas (IRPA). Our researchers have received funding for collaborative research projects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer and infectious diseases. Three of our academic staff have successfully competed and received funding from the Ranjeet Bhagwan Singh Research Grant, administered by the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia and the MAKNA Cancer.

* In order for the student to progress from one semester to the next, the supervisor has to complete a form on the students' progress. The student will be allowed to register for the next semester only if the student's performance has been satisfactory. Students are encouraged to present their research work in research seminars and at conferences and also encouraged to publish their research findings in scientific journals.

The IMU academic staff members who supervise the research candidates have well-established reputation nationally and internationally in their areas of expertise. These senior faculty take part in international conferences and are in touch with key researchers from the other countries.


Degree Awarded by The IMU
The degrees will be awarded by the IMU on the basis of research and the successful completion of a thesis. Examination is by assessment of the thesis and includes an oral examination concerning the thesis and the research on which it is based. The evaluation comprise of the examination of thesis and viva voce.


Facilities
Being a research programme, there is the flexibility of conducting research either in the laboratories or in clinical settings. The research postgraduate students have the benefit of working in well-equipped laboratories and access to the IMU well-stocked library. A clinical research centre based in IMU Clinical School in Seremban looks into respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. It also conducts clinical trials in diabetes research. In addition, a bio-equivalence centre within the institution was set up in line with helping the government to achieve its target of manufacturing high quality generic drugs locally.

The purpose-built Research Laboratory supports research in basic and applied biomedical sciences in such fields as genetic engineering, molecular and DNA research, tissue culture, and the development of rapid biochemical diagnostic procedures.

In addition to the specialised areas of scientific and medical research, the IMU also has a Medical Education Research Unit (MERU) which plans, develops and implements new teaching-learning strategies, including the use of innovative educational technology. Through close collaborations with the Partner Medical Schools all over the world, the IMU has been successful in developing medical education methods which are best suited for its students and the institution.
