Why Choose Nursing As A Career?
Nursing today is different from nursing in the past. Through improved education, nurses are better prepared to take up the challenge of a career in Nursing which offers a breadth of opportunity in education, clinical practice, research and management. A nurse may aspire to be a university professor, a clinical specialist, a director of nursing or a researcher. An experienced nurse may also run her own nursing home or nursery and there are opportunities to pursue a career abroad.

Why Choose Nursing As A Course of Study?
Nursing is a profession that focuses on the caring, nurturing, educating and research aspects of the healthcare system. People who are caring, dedicated, possess leadership skills and have a calling to serve the sick and improve their care should consider using these unique qualities by choosing nursing as a career. Nursing teaches how to use minds, hands and hearts in caring for those in need. This course focuses on developing nurses who are caring, assertive, well-disciplined, motivated and equipped with critical thinking skills.

The nursing degree programme is a four-year full-time programme. This degree programme prepares a person to become a registered nurse, and be able to practise the profession in a variety of settings, in either the public or private sector healthcare sectors. Graduates of this programme are eligible to apply for registration with the Malaysian Nursing Board on passing the Registration Examination. The IMU also plans to conduct the Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) degree through a distance-learning programme. The distance-learning programme offers a more flexible and accessible method of education where students may study at their own pace, when and where they prefer.

Clinical Experience
Nursing, as a practice discipline, requires that students are provided with adequate knowledge as well as the basic nursing skills. IMU has set up a sophisticated nursing skills laboratory similar to a ward set up with complete patient units. This will enable students to obtain the necessary skills before they are posted to the clinical areas to care for patients.

IMU students gain clinical experience through attachments at the private and public hospitals and posting in the community health centres. Students will be supervised and guided by nurse educators from IMU and teacher practitioners from the private and public sectors.

    Other Learning Experiences
  • Development of self-directed learning skills;
  • Learning through group discussion - clinical conferences, case methods, case studies, problem-based learning, etc;
  • Development of communication skills through activities like role plays, case presentation, etc;

Other teaching strategies to deliver the programme which include lectures, tutorials, demonstration, assignments, project papers, research methods and visits.
