Pioneering Spirits and Transformative Leadership: A Guinea Pig Perspective

One of the most difficult achievements for an aspiring clinical leader is to spearhead and cultivate an organizational culture that is firmly rooted in the tradition of excellence and yet maintaining its agility and responsiveness, while also trying to be commercially successful and socially impactful. As a transformational leader, one has to inspire people, empower them to achieve change, motivate them to deal with the inevitable while steering towards the right growth paths while progressively evolving in structure and operations just to stay relevant and maintain the lead position in a highly competitive healthcare industry.

Dr Goh will share his experience on how his unconventional medical career evolved from a clinician to healthcare entrepreneur/investor by traversing different continents and communities globally since he set foot at IMU in 1993 as the “Pioneer Batch M1/93”. He will expound how different life events and milestones shaped his outlook in life and career paths. Dr Goh will also outline some of the cautionary tales and critical lessons learned throughout his journey.  He will highlight the key principles of how to nurture “pioneering spirits”, thinking “out of the box”, “living on the edge” and being more comfortable with “risks and uncertainties”.  He will explain how we can capitalize and be emboldened by these traits to drive clinical innovation through a transformative leadership mindset.  He will demonstrate case studies on how leadership style matters in galvanizing organizational change among clinical peers.

This paper will also suggest some strategies for young clinicians to focus on while navigating through the complex clinical career path during their formative years.
