Ismail Burud Sattar (Malaysia)

Associate Professor Dr Ismail Burud, MS Gen Surg, FRCS Eng, FAIS is an Associate Professor of Surgery at IMU University. He is a general and laparoscopic surgeon with interest in hepatobiliary and bariatric surgery. He was a General and Laparoscopic surgeon for 13 years at the Armed Forces Hospital, Kuwait.

He was awarded the Gold Medal and Certificate of Appreciation by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense, Kuwait for Dedicated and Excellent Service. For his community engagement services, he was felicitated by the Indian Doctors Forum, Kuwait in 2011. At IMU he held various positions like the Curriculum Coordinator, Head of the division of surgery and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs. He completed his certification in Health Professions Education in May 2024 and is currently pursuing his Post Graduate Diploma.

Dr Ismail has been actively engaged with various community projects and has been instrumental in designing the curriculum and assessment for the sign language interpreter’s course. He was appoint-ed as the Community Engagement Fellow by the University in 2021. He received the Community Service Award for – Partnership Excellence in 2023 and – Leadership in Community Service in 2025.

Dr Ismail has been an Examiner for the MRCS Part B intercollegiate Exams since 2019. He conducts training programmes for students in surgical skills including Laparoscopic procedures. He has 70 journal publications which include clinical and medical education articles and contributed to four book chapters. His research interests in interprofessional education, assessment and the role of nutrition in surgical care.

He was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2021 IMU International Learning Resources Festival for the development of a mobile App for student learning and the Bronze Innovation Medal at the New Academia Learning Innovation NALI 2022 for Peer role-play. He received the Teaching Excellence Award and John Simpson trophy in 2025 at the IMU University Day.
