Quality Management and Benchmarking in Dental Education

In this age of rapid technological advancement and intense competition, the success of academic institutions depends on the quality of education. In education, it is only possible to determine the quality by comparing the results with the given goal, or by comparing it with previously established standards (benchmarking).  For quality to be sustainable, there is a need to develop a quality culture amongst staff and students.  This main objective of this workshop is to provide  participants with knowledge and skills to
    i)    Identify core areas to be benchmarked for quality management
ii)    Identify quality indicators for identified core areas
iii)    Develop a quality enhancement framework to monitor quality targets
iv)    Develop an action plan to close the loop in continuous quality improvement

Empowering Peer Learning- Implementing Peer-Assisted Learning in Dental Education

Peer-assisted learning (PAL) has occurred informally in health profession education. The benefits of formal PAL are well documented in the literature, with a positive impact on competencies, attitude, stakeholder engagement, and resource management. PAL’s success is attributed to many factors including faculty support, instructional design, learning space, roles of the peer leader and group size. Well-structured PAL activities promote higher-order cognitive skills, foster collaboration, contributing to the transition from passive to active, engaged and reflective learners. This workshop will start by discussing the evidence behind PAL in health profession education and dental education and an interactive overview of the theoretical framework, learning models and various implementation examples of PAL. This will be followed by a discussion of the role of stakeholders in enriching the PAL experience. Participants will be divided into small groups to identify, develop and suggest implementation strategies for PAL activities contextual to their needs. Discussions addressing the challenges in sustaining and evaluating PAL will follow. The use of technology-enhanced learning as a vehicle for enhancing peer-assisted learning (PAL) will be addressed. The speakers will share their experience in engaging dental students in various PAL activities and the outcomes obtained.

Interactive Presentation and Gamification in Teaching and Learning

Students learn more when they participate in the process of learning. Therefore, whether we're giving a lecture to hundreds of students or conducting a small group discussion, one of our goals for the class should always be to actively engage students. The dental curriculum is unique as it has the clinical teaching component which is very immersive and hands-on. However, when it comes to delivery of theories in the classroom, many are still struggling on ways to get their students to be actively involved. Sage on the stage teaching style is still practised by many and this dampens the spirit of active learning. This workshop aims to introduce low-cost techniques to make your classroom more interactive by employing a web-based audience response system called Mentimeter. Further, students' understanding of the lessons could be evaluated in a fun way by using Kahoot; an online game-based platform. A 30 minutes introduction of the topic will be conducted, followed by a 3 hours hands-on session on how to use both platforms. Participants need to bring their own laptop as they will work in small groups to create a short and interactive presentation. Interactive presentation and gamification of lessons promote active learning and fit the learning style of current dental students who are mostly digital natives.

Clinical Communication & Curriculum Design for Dental Education

In this workshop, we will examine a range of approaches and tools currently used to support and assess dental students’ development of clinical communication capabilities and competencies. Drawing on previous work with colleagues at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong, I will share initiatives and resources developed across University Teaching Development Grants and supervision of postgraduate researchers that aimed to support the explicit teaching, learning and assessing of effective interactions in clinical dentistry across the years of the curriculum. A particular focus of this workshop will be to consider a developmental approach towards integrated and coherent planning across the years of the curriculum. Participants will be invited to consider curriculum alignment whilst reviewing the approaches and tools in the workshop.

The Use of Videos for Personalised Learning

New technologies will assist teachers both in the pre-clinical and clinical part of the course.  These technologies are familiar to our students as they will be familiar to them from both their school education and social life.  As teachers there is a well reported lag in their uptake for teaching purposes.  The use of technology in a blended format may assist in self-directed learning and assist our students in personalising their learning experience.  One medium that students appreciate is the use of videos of clinical procedures.  This is readily available on the Internet.  Some commentators suggest that this is set to expand even further.

The aim of this workshop is to present research on the use of videos in teaching and to share best practice.  The workshop will explore how to structure a course and the best way to introduce such technology with a blended learning approach.

The first session will discuss the use of lecture capture and how students use the medium in their own personalised learning.  The use of short videos in teaching will be demonstrated. This will include simple methods of producing your own material and how to incorporate into the course.  There is also the question of external material and how best to assist students in using such material.  Assisting students on how to interact with external resources such as You Tube will be covered.  There will be the opportunity to share best practice and develop teaching strategies on how best to incorporate the medium.  The concept of Fake news and how to assist students in understanding the perils of learning from the web will be discussed

The second session will follow of from the morning and once again will be interactive.  There will be breakout groups which will lead on the introduction of such technology in different areas Preclinical vs Clinical, using students to creating learning material, introducing blended learning techniques.  This interactive workshop will be led by educators who are researching and publishing in this area of dental education.

The final aim of the workshop will be to put together guidelines for dental educators on how to implement blended learning techniques and these will be published/distributed to participants of the SEAADE conference.

Implementation of ICDAS and ICCMS in Dental Undergraduate Curriculum: Let’s Make It Easy

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases of humankind Recently much money, time and resource has been devoted to developing a better understanding and management system for dental caries using a holistic approach However, its acceptance and implementation remains a matter of difficulty for the dental fraternity Detection of early carious lesions has always been a challenge Lately, the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS) have found to be reliable and valid for oral healthcare delivery, epidemiology and dental research However, its implementation in the institution is still reported to be challenging in many locations This workshop will highlight challenges and solutions in implementation of ICDAS, risk assessment model-based management and ICCMS, including evidence, for the reliable standardization of faculty and students on a routine basis Particular attention will be given to critical coding problems which occur in the preclinical/clinical settings Evidence-based e-learning tools to make the cariology teaching more interesting will be considered This workshop will also focus on collaborative learning and skills enhancement of participants by engaging them in first understanding and then planning how to implement ICDAS and ICCMS in dental undergraduate curriculum This workshop will be a contribution to efforts to change the mind set of dental students, budding dentists and especially dental educators in dealing with dental caries.

    Inter-professional Education: Guide for Implementation

Interprofessional collaborative care (IPC) consists of working within and across healthcare disciplines and is considered essential to achieve a more inclusive, patient-centred care. It provides a means to support patient safety and address deficiencies of global healthcare provider. Interprofessional education (IPE) provides the knowledge and experience to students to achieve these goals.

IPE has been adopted by educators with varying degrees of implementation and success.

In this highly interactive workshop the participants will be first given the brief introduction regarding the concept of IPE and its application in dentistry. A mind-mapping model will be used to graphically display participants’ thoughts and suggestions. This workshop will also help to design application based IPE strategies which would enhance discussion, sharing and problem-solving at their end.

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis in Dental Educational Research

Dental education remains a cornerstone in the training and development of oral healthcare professionals. It is both an art and a science which primarily focuses on the delivery of core knowledge and impartation of a broad range of skills to empower novice clinicians to competently and independently provide safe and high quality oral health care services to patients.

Dental education has evolved over time with the advent of new pedagogies and technologies in teaching, learning and assessment. Dental educators around the world have latched onto such evolution and advanced their efforts to make a difference. While much has been done to champion the changes and innovations in dental education, less may have been achieved in terms of measuring the effectiveness and impact of dental educators. The literature related to this area of work is not as widely known. Given the importance of dental education, it is necessary to invest adequate effort and resources to look into measuring the effectiveness and impact of dental educators.

Developing Assessor Judgments in Standards-Based Approaches in Dental Education

Outcomes-based models in higher education recognize the centrality of standards-based assessment in fulfilling the goal of curriculum coherence through ‘constructive alignment’. The writing of clear yet nuanced descriptors or standards specifications proves to be a continuing challenge in higher education, especially in performance-based tasks. This workshop aims to take this mission forward by examining one assessment type: performance-based tasks in undergraduate dentistry. In this workshop, we will share various models and approaches to identifying and writing standards descriptors/ assessment rubrics for dental education. We will also problematize the use of scalar attributes such as ‘excellent’, ‘good’, ‘unsatisfactory’ in denoting criteria and explore methods to best capture salient features considered by assessors to be central to task performance across levels.
