Medical graduates excel at IMU’s Partner University, Jefferson Medical College

02 Sep 2013

May 2013 – Two medical graduates from Malaysia did well in their studies in Jefferson Medical College (JMC), Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA. These two graduates studied the first two and a half years of their medical programme in International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia and then transferred to JMC for completion of their degree after passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. Dr Vei Shaun Siow, an IMU-Thomas Jefferson graduate of May 2013, was honoured with AOA (Alpha-Omega-Alpha Medical Honour Society) by Thomas Jefferson University based on his academic performance, USMLE Step 1 score and extracurricular activities. He also won the Philip P Ripepi, MD Prize in General Surgery, awarded to a senior medical student pursuing a career in general surgery, deemed most worthy by the Jefferson Medical College surgical faculty. Vei Shaun is currently training in Surgery in University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre. Another IMU-Thomas Jefferson graduate IMU is very proud of is Dr Wei Phin Tan. He received honourable mention (runner-up) in the Philip P Ripepi, MD Prize in General Surgery. Wei Phin also received honourable mention (runner-up) in the Hyman Menduke Research Prize, awarded to the graduating senior who, as determined by the Committee on Research of the faculty, has demonstrated excellence in research while a student at Jefferson Medical College. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson University in May 2013. Wei Phin is now doing Surgery-Preliminary in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. JMC is part of Thomas Jefferson University. It is one of IMU’s partner universities where its medical students can receive academic credit for the subjects they have successfully completed in IMU and use this towards the completion of their degree in JMC. Founded in 1824, JMC has awarded more than 27,000 medical degrees and offers both graduate medical education programmes and innovative joint degree programmes to more than 1,000 students each year. Heartiest Congratulations to Wei Phin and Vei Shaun for their achievements and for doing us proud!
