Kuala Lumpur, 19 September 2022 – Tonik Asia Group Sdn Bhd (TAGS) and the International Medical University (IMU) have today entered into an agreement with the aim of providing holistic Chiropractic training and teaching to their students in Malaysia.
This collaboration is the first of its kind in Malaysia as IMU, the sole academic Chiropractic programme provider in Southeast Asia extends its curriculum to formally collaborate with a Chiropractic service provider to offer clinical attachments and mobility programme for their Chiropractic students.
Under this partnership, students from the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Chiropractic programme at the University will undergo hands-on practical sessions at TAGS facilities across the country. As part of Clinical Skills Development, students will undergo both mobility programmes and at a later stage, clinical attachments supervised by senior chiropractors at TAGS facilities.
The programme targets to have at least 100 students go through these sessions over the next 5 years, for the mobility programme alone.
Prof Abdul Aziz Baba, Vice-Chancellor of IMU said “By their final semester, students are expected to display a high level of competency in patient assessment and care as well as a high level of professionalism, ethics, interprofessional collaboration and co-management. We believe that partnership programmes like this will allow our students to employ the appropriate assessments on patients in real life, including understanding the history, conducting physical examinations and then detailing the relevant clinical outcomes in a clinical setting. ”
“Hands on training within a clinical setting is key in ensuring our students have the right skills to start their chiropractic practice.”
He added that TAGS’ nationwide presence is beneficial in this collaboration with IMU as it allows for students originating from all over the country to access clinical attachments with ease, based on their locations.
Dr Savitha Dharan, Chief Operating Officer TAGS said “TAGS has 25 years of Chiropractic experience, and we have seen a rising trend in the recent years as people shift towards healthcare that is more consumer driven. More patients are choosing alternative types of healthcare like chiropractic treatment for rehabilitation and recovery versus consuming medication. Chiropractic care is increasingly receiving validation as an effective form of management for low back pain and a variety of other neuromusculoskeletal conditions. For TAGS, this partnership serves as a testament to this shifting trend and we are proud to be able to play a part in moulding future chiropractor practitioners in the country”.
“With our experience evolving and redefining chiropractic care. we are honoured to play a role in the process of educating young chiropractors by exposing them to both the clinical aspects of treating patients as well as the business elements involved in running a practice. Entering into the academic ecosystem is the next natural step for us as we outline how we can serve the country better towards becoming leaders in the Chiropractic and Rehabilitation space” she added.
IMU and TAGS aim to kick start the programme in January 2023, where students will be able to opt to be placed at TAGS facilities for practical training and exposure during their semester breaks.
Tonik Asia Group Sdn Bhd (TAGS) was founded in 1997, beginning its journey with a single Chiropractic clinic that expanded nationwide as a leading musculoskeletal rehabilitation care provider. Currently, the organization has a presence in 8 states across Malaysia with 11 TAGS Chiropractic and Rehabilitation locations offering a multidisciplinary approach that include Chiropractors, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist. With 25 years of experience, TAGS is a leader in its industry with rehabilitation protocols using the latest technological advancements.
