21 Jan 2016

It has always been Nicholas Fah Guo Yuen’s goal to study in IMU. When he first heard that there would be a pre-university programme in IMU, its Foundation in Science (FiS), he immediately seized the opportunity to start his studies in the University. Initially, he set his heart on studying medicine but his interest changed to chiropractic after attending several workshops provided by IMU. “Miraculously, the day that I was informed of the success of my scholarship application was on my birthday. It was an unbelievable and indescribable feeling that rushed all over my body. I immediately informed my closest friends and family.”

“I sincerely believe that the IMU FIS programme really managed to cultivate my skills in interacting and critical thinking as well as independent studying to improve myself as a whole. I would have never thought that I would be a recipient of a full scholarship provided by IMU.”

Nicholas is one of six International Medical University (IMU) Foundation in Science students who received a financial boost when they were awarded the University’s Scholarships for undergraduate studies. The Scholarships in the form of full or partial tuition fee waivers are for students demonstrating outstanding academic excellence, extra curriculum participation and leadership qualities. Nicholas received a 100% tuition fee waiver for his undergraduate studies in chiropractic. Another student who have completed the FiS and received a 100% tuition fee waiver for his undergraduate studies is Joshua Kuruvilla. He applied for the scholarship in order to ease his parents’ financial burden and to enable him to continue studying his degree at IMU. “I felt tremendous gratitude and a euphoric feeling of joy for being able to assist my parents, thanking God for the wonderful opportunity He has given me and eager to prove myself worthy as a scholarship student.”

“For me, the FiS programme gave me the time and ample opportunities to explore the prospective degrees to go for. It also gave me the opportunity to work hard for the scholarship opportunity, with the scholarship being the culmination of my hopes and efforts in this context.”

I am very lucky to be selected as one of the interviewee. I started to do some research and listened to some advice and tips for interview from my friends preparing myself well for the interview. I could not believe it when I read the e-mail, I read it for a few times to make sure that it is for real. I was very excited and told my family members and friends about this good news. “The FIS programme allows me to have a better understanding in order to get good results which fulfilled the requirements for scholarship application and helps me in the future. The lecturers guided me well and trained me to finish the experiment on time and also familiarise me with the basic lab technique skills. Since I studied here for a year, I am already used to the environment in IMU.

‘Besides that, the FIS programme has a module which is Cross Boundary Studies. This module has trained me well in leadership skills and also problem solving skills. Furthermore, I also learnt to work well together with other people through this module.”
