The IMU School of Dentistry provides education for undergraduate and postgraduate dental programme to prepare students to practise dentistry in the 21st century with knowledge and skills to deliver patient-centred care to different patient populations and varied practice settings, ethically and professionally.

The School presents a dynamic curriculum that provides excellent clinical training with exposure to the various dental specialties, integrates the health sciences with clinical experience and utilises modern technology.

  • IMU Final Year Dental Student Wins Coveted Award at 31st SEAADE Scientific Meeting 2020
IMU final year dental student, Jacklyn Ng Zhi Ling participated in an oral presentation competition and presented her paper on clinical audit at the 31st South East Asian Association of Dental Education (SEAADE) Scientific Meeting 2020. The conference was held virtually for the first time as a joint virtual conference with IADR-SEA, organised by the Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Jacklyn won the coveted SEAADE-Lion Innovation Award for the Best Oral Presentation in Curriculum Design which was the highest award conferred at the SEAADE conference after competing with 34 other participants comprising of clinicians, lecturers and dental students.   • Dental Alumni Win New Zealand Research Foundation Prize
The New Zealand Research Foundation Prize was established in 1982 by the New Zealand Research Foundation Board. It is awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, each year to the final year Dental Student who, in the opinion of the Faculty of Dentistry, shows the greatest aptitude for research as an undergraduate. The award shall be made only to a candidate of sufficient merit. The recipients of this award, Clarine Cheah and Celeste Lim, began their Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia in 2016 and transferred to the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2018 under the Partner Dental School Programme. While the prize is normally awarded to a single candidate, an exception was made in this instance as Clarine and Celeste undertook the elective research project together. Read more on IMU News.
  • IMU Students Did It Again – Winning First Place at International Dental E-quiz
30-31 May 2020 – Two  final year dental students from IMU, Janice Nga Diong Li and Shirlene Foo Yih Ting did IMU proud by winning first prize in the recently concluded 3’O’ International Dental E-Quiz Competition 2020. This competition which was organised by AIMST University, Malaysia and conducted visa Zoom,  saw the participation of 138 participants from nine countries. The competition focused mainly on the 3 O’s namely, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Oral Pathology, and Oral Surgery. Read about it on IMU News.
  • Instilling Oral Health Awareness in the Community
19-20 April 2018 – The IMU Oral Health Week 2018 was carried out at the IMU Bukit Jalil campus, with each day of the event proving a success and living up to its expectations. This year’s theme was ‘Fighting Enamel Cruelty’, and as you all know, enamel is one of the most important aspects of a tooth. The main objective of this event was to instil oral health awareness within the IMU community as well as the wider community, to minimise the occurrence of oral health diseases, to promote the importance of regular dental visit and lastly, to improve quality of life.  Read more on IMU News.

  • Dental Undergraduates Survival Kit for Dentistry Students
25 February 2017 – The Malaysian Dental Students’ Association (MDSA), an NGO, organised Dental Undergraduates Survival Kit (DUSK) at IMU. Instead of the usual leisurely Saturday when students head out to the nearest café to hang out or just stay at home to sleep in, this particular Saturday however, wasn’t so for a bunch of budding dentists. An inaugural event which proves to be one of its kind in Malaysia, possibly in the world, DUSK was organised with the aim to help dentistry students’ transition to a dentist. Dr Shekhar Bhatia

Lecturer, Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontics

I have been involved in this programme from its inception. The programme aims to train students in the understanding of pulpal and periapical pathophysiology, selection of appropriate dental materials/instruments, fundamental rationale of clinical techniques and management of failed Endodontic cases of moderate difficulty. To facilitate smooth functioning and learning in IMU, the students would be assigned personal mentors to substantiate their academic pursuit.

The1-year Postgraduate Diploma in Prosthodontics programme is delivered and supervised by highly qualified and experienced local and international prosthodontists. I am one of these faculty members teaching this programme, with many of us delivering different aspects of treatments based on our expertise.

Studying Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry in IMU has been a highlight in my implantology journey. I’ve always enjoyed the university environment, classes, lectures and seminars. While in IMU, I am able to do and learn more with the best team of multidisciplinary specialists. It has been a truly invaluable learning experience for me, it has really improved my knowledge and skills in implant dentistry. To those who are either beginner or advance level, this course is just right to develop skills and gain more updates about implant dentistry. IMU has provides huge support in terms of online journal subscription as well as latest academic books and learning materials.

Graduate, Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry

This course is a terrific course for dental practitioners who are beginning their implant careers to those with much more experience. It leaves you with both the interest and confidence to start working with implants. It is very comprehensive and covers all aspects of placing dental implants. The teaching from a large number of specialists (periodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics) has been excellent and has benefited all colleagues from absolute novices to those with more experience.
