FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between Prosthodontics and Endodontics?

Endodontics is a treatment pertaining to saving the existing teeth from caries and pulpal infections by performing root canal treatment and related procedures. However, prosthodontics treatment is performed after removal of teeth and refers to replacement of missing teeth or related structures by artificial means.

I read in the programme brochure that this is a one-year full-time course. I have my own private practice. Will I be able to complete the course in one year?

Yes, as this programme has been designed with working dental practitioners in mind. Dental practitioners who have registered for the course are guided and mentored to fulfil the requirements of the course in one year. However, those who may not be able to commit the time to fulfil the requirements will be provided an allowance to complete the requirements up to a period of three years.

As this course is an approved programme, will I be considered a specialist after taking this course?

No, this is not a speciality course and you are not considered as a specialist. However, the postgraduate diploma qualification can be added to your credentials to certify that you are trained through an approved university course to provide endodontic treatment.

What is the programme structure like?

This programme includes 6 modules in 2 semesters with a total of 30 credit hours to be delivered over a period of 1 year. Duration of each module is approximately 6 weeks including 1-week of compulsory on site activities in IMU School of Dentistry. Yes, you can treat your own patients in IMU and the charges will be applicable to the patients as per the IMU’s Oral Health Clinic Postgraduate student charges will be slightly lesser than the expert charges.

“The primary objective of the IMU Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontics is to provide dental practitioners the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in Endodontics; to plan and treat a range of patients needing minimal to moderately difficult root canal therapy. This programme is designed to support the training and learning of working dental practitioners by using a flexible modular mode of delivery and a wide array of teaching methods supplemented with guidance from personal tutors. The training emphasises the provision of care based on current evidence, appropriate technologies and specialised techniques. An evidence-based patient-centered approach is used in advising patients concerning treatment options and prognosis. The programme covers knowledge acquisition through face-to-face and online lectures and case-based discussion, skills development through hands-on training in the simulation lab, and clinical experience through patient care at the IMU Oral Health Centre and at the student’s own workplace. This programme aims to produce graduates able to coordinate a multidisciplinary approach in managing oral health care, and provide accessible and affordable endodontic care. Graduates are expected to be able to update their skills through lifelong learning, and share their expertise with their peers.”
