IMU Welcomes new Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor

1 January 2014 – The International Medical University (IMU) is pleased to announce the appointment of YBhg Dato’ Dr Amir Abbas as its fourth Chancellor and YBhg Dato’ Dr Gan Ee Kiang as its Pro-Chancellor. YBhg Dato’ Dr Amir Abbas YBhg Dato’ Dr Amir Abbas brings a wealth of experience to the University. He served as the Pro-Chancellor of IMU from 2011 to 2013 and was a member of the Board of Governors, IMU from 2007 to 2013.  The Foundation Dean of Faculty of Medicine, UKM (1972-1975), YBhg Dato’ Dr Amir also served UKM as member of the University Council (1987-1998) and member of the Council of the University of Malaya from 1981 to 1987. Within this period, he also served as member of the Board of University Hospital of UM. Currently he is Managing Director of Meditek Equipment Sdn. Bhd.  Prior to his appointment as Dean of UKM, he was the Head of Health Research Department, Institute of Medical Research (1969-1972). YBhg Dato’ Dr Amir Abbas obtained his medical degree (MBBS) from University of Malaya, Singapore in 1961.  He received MRCP in 1969 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of England (FRCP) in 1983. YBhg Dato’ Dr Amir Abbas has been an active member of various councils and boards. He was the Chairman of The Malaysian Medical Association of Selangor (1982-1985) and President of the College of Physicians of Malaysia (1986-1988). He has also served as a Member of the National Council for Scientific Research and Development (1981-1987). YBhg Dato’ Dr Gan Ee Kiang YBhg Dato’ Dr Gan Ee Kiang obtained his PhD degree in Pharmacology in 1972 from University of Western Australia.  He joined Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) as a Lecturer and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1977, Professor in 1990 and Senior Professor in 1994.  Whilst serving as an academic staff of USM, he was appointed Deputy Dean in 1977, Acting Dean in 1979 and Dean of School of Pharmaceutical Sciences for 17 years from 1979-1995.  During his tenure as a Dean, the School gained international prominence in Clinical Pharmacy Education as well as consultancy services and research and development (R&D) activities.  During this time, he was instrumental in setting up three new centres at USM: (i) Drug Research Centre in 1981, (ii) National Poison Centre in 1995, and (iii) National Doping Control Centre in 1996. YBhg Dato’ Dr Gan Ee Kiang has published two books over 100 scientific/professional publications and is a co-inventor of two patented inventions.  He was appointed, on three occasions, as WHO temporary advisor and was an invited speaker at various professional meetings in USA, Europe and Asia.  He serves as member of the Editorial Board of several professional journals. He is the first Malaysian to be invited to serve as a member on the International Health Advisory Panel of the United States Pharmacopoeia Convention (USP) from 1990-1995.  He had served on numerous national bodies and corporations, and had been a panel member for the National Panel for Best Inventor Award MOSTE (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) for almost 10 years and a member of the Malaysian Drug Control Authority (DCA) for eight years. YBhg Dato’ Dr Gan Ee Kiang is the founder of USAINS Group and served as Managing Director of the group since 1999, comprising the holding company, Usains Holding Sdn. Bhd. (USAINS), the first company incorporated by a public university in Malaysia with the approval of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, and its subsidiaries.  USAINS was incorporated to help USM generate income through technology transfer, commercialisation of R&D results and making available University expertise/facilities to serve the public and the private sectors.  He retired from USAINS in June 2013. He is active in community services and sits on the Board of Directors of several limited companies.  He had been consultant on many occasions to banks and venture capital for their investment and currently advisor to several companies.  Dato’ Gan has been member of the Board of Governors, IMU, Malaysia since 2004.
