Diabetes is linked to an increased risk of developing cancer. However, the exact mechanism as to how diabetes could lead to tumourigenesis remains unknown. Dr Mah Li Yen, formerly trained at the Beatson Institute (UK) and currently a scientist at International Medical University(IMU), was awarded the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) Top Prize Award in the Science and Technology Research Grant category at the MTSF 20th Anniversary to investigate the potential biological links between type 2 diabetes and cancer. MTSF was established in 1993 as a non-profit foundation with the objective of contributing to the progress of science and technology in Malaysia.
