A Symbolic Ceremony to Signify Entry into a Professional Healthcare Community

23 Sep 2022

The White Coat Ceremony (WCC) is a customary practice to embrace and develop professional values and attributes in each student. In this ceremony, each student is symbolically robed in a white coat to signify their entry into a professional healthcare community.

The School of Pharmacy, International Medical University, has been practising this tradition since the establishment of the BPharm (Hons) programme in 2004. Even the COVID-19 pandemic could not stop the momentum of having a WCC, which was conducted virtually in the previous 2 years. The transition towards the endemic phase reclaimed the ceremony to be conducted physically this year.

On 19 September 19, 2022, the incoming BP122 cohort witnessed WCC in the presence of honorable guest, Tuan Haji Amrahi Buang, the President of the Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS), the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, IMU, Prof Dr Mohd Zulkefeli Mat Jusoh, faculty members and senior pharmacy students.

The keynote from Tuan Haji Amrahi highlighted the importance of digital competency and medication safety among pharmacists, which would ensure safe and quality healthcare for the community and the public. He also shared on the recently celebrated World Patient Safety Day and the incoming celebration of World Pharmacists Day in relation to the important role of pharmacists as one of the most trusted professions worldwide.

We took the opportunity to express our gratitude by projecting a video clip of the front-line warriors of our pharmacy alumni who served the nation in the pandemic as representatives of healthcare professionals.

The event was live streamed on Facebook, which was liked and appreciated by professionals and like-minded people from the public domain.
