Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor Shared Knowledge and Expertise with Postgraduate Diploma Students

28 Jun 2018

The Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry programme (PGDID) at the IMU School of Dentistry is the first and only Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) accredited postgraduate diploma programme. It is taught by well qualified local and international speakers who bring with them rich experiences in the field.

On 13 April, 2018, Dr Andrew Tawse Smith, our Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor from University of Otago, shared his knowledge and expertise with the Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry students as part of their training for Module 4 – Restoring Fully Edentulous Patients with Implant- supported Removable Prosthesis.

More about the PGDID programme: This programme equips graduates with knowledge and skills to treat their patients who require simple to advanced levels of complexity of Implant Dentistry. It is also structured, organised and benchmarked to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Diploma in Implant Dentistry Examination.

The programme is designed to support the training and learning of working dental practitioners by using a flexible modular mode of delivery using a wide array of teaching methods supplemented with guidance from personal tutors. Early clinical exposure is planned, and students are encouraged and supported to place their first implant in the first module. They will be closely supervised our experienced implantologists. The training standards have been developed to ensure patient safety.

The training will emphasise the need to provide a good standard of care based on current evidence in the field of Implant Dentistry. An evidence-based patient-centered approach will be used in advising patients concerning the choice of prostheses, techniques and materials available in implant dentistry. The PGDID programme is offered both full-time and part-time. In the full time programme, all the six modules should be completed in one year. In the part-time programme, the students can choose to do two or three modules per year up to a maximum of 3 years. Students have the option to do the implant surgeries in their own clinic or at IMU Oral Health Centre. Clinical work starts in the first module.
