22 January to 31 January 2019 – International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia hosted two final year nursing students from Jonkoping University, Sweden, Viktor Tideman and Sofia Tengelin, under its Student Mobility Programme. This programme created a great opportunity for them to conduct their research, get to know more about the healthcare system and experience the beautiful cultural diversity in Malaysia. During their two weeks stay, Viktor and Sofia had a tour of the IMU campus in Bukit Jalil and visited the Chiropractic Clinic and Chinese Medicine Clinic. They praised IMU for having adequate facilities for the students and felt that it would be a very conducive place for students to pursue their studies. Sofia and Viktor were delighted that they were given the opportunity to experience acupuncture and cupping therapies from the Chinese Medicine Clinic as both of them had never experienced these therapies in Sweden. Besides this, some of the lecturers from the Nursing Division took the time to bring these two students to visit Sau Seng Lum Dialysis and Stroke Rehab Centre, Tong Sim Senior Citizen Care Home, Tiratana and Klinik Kesihatan Gombak Setia. At the Tong Sim Senior Citizen Care Home, they joined the IMU Pharmacy and Nursing Science students in conducting the Vision Test and some Chinese New Year activities for the elderly. The Chinese New Year activities provided them the opportunity to taste “Yee Sang”, a raw fish salad, for the first time. While in Klinik Kesihatan Gombak Setia, the students and one of the nursing lecturers had a short tour of the vicinity and was given a briefing by Matron Norazlina. The students were impressed that the Klinik Kesihatan healthcare practitioners saw approximately 700 to 1000 patients daily.
Both Sofia and Viktor ended their mobility programme with a closing ceremony attended by the Associate Dean for Research & External Affairs, School of Health Sciences, IMU, Prof Chin Beek Yoke, nursing lecturers and the staff from Placement Unit and International Office. At the event, both students were given a certificate of attendance each.
We would like to wish Viktor Tideman and Sofia Tengelin all the best in their future undertakings!
