18 Sep 2023

The first ever Oral Surgery Masterclass was successfully organised by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons from the Division of Clinical Oral Health Sciences, School of Dentistry, IMU on 15 and 16 July 2023 at the IMU campus in Bukit Jalil. The Oral Surgery Masterclass 2023 dealt with the “Essentials of Impacted Third Molar Surgery– Getting the Basics Right”

This masterclass aimed to assist practitioners in planning and performing Impacted Third Molar Surgery more effectively, thereby enhancing the safety of the procedure for patients. The skills and insights gained by the practitioners would definitely enhance and broaden their horizon in their clinical practice. The intensive two-day workshop included various case discussions, lectures on key concepts, CBCT training- hands on session, video demonstrations and most importantly skills development by performing simulated surgery on models.

The case discussions and video demonstrations mainly aimed to discuss and streamline treatment planning and performing surgeries on different types of impacted teeth with varied difficulty. The lectures were about the key concepts of applied anatomy, challenges faced during surgery, assessment of cases and complications.

During the CBCT training each participant was introduced to the applications of CBCT for impacted teeth evaluation and the key aspects of the CBCT software and its use.

Day two was mostly dedicated for the hands-on session where the participants performed surgery on 4 different types of impacted teeth on NISSIN models specially imported from Japan for this masterclass. The facilitator to trainee ratio was kept low for maximum individual attention to be provided to each participant.

The course received an overwhelming positive response from the participants. The feedback was excellent for the content, quality of speakers, delivery methods and the usefulness of the masterclass. There was also special praise for the case sharing sessions, hands-on practical session and the effort put in by the facilitators. There were local participants as well as those who came from all the way from Brunei, Sabah and Kedah.

The surgeons involved were Prof Ong Siew Tin, Dr Siddharth Dhanaraj and Dr Naveen Jnanendrappa who was also the Organizing Chair for this Masterclass. The mammoth effort of meticulous planning, preparation and eventually conduct of the masterclass was well worth it after the excellent feedback from the participants were received. We look forward to the Masterclass in 2024, hope to see you there!
