Prof Yeoh Peng Nam Appointed as IMU’s Dean, School of Pharmacy

9 April 2014 – The International Medical University (IMU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof Yeoh Peng Nam as Dean, School of Pharmacy. Commenting on the appointment as Dean, School of Pharmacy, Prof Yeoh said,

“This is indeed a great honour. Together with the staff and the students, we will endeavour to work towards an iconic School of Pharmacy.”

Prof Dr Yeoh Peng Nam (B Pharmacy, University of  Singapore,  M.Sc., PhD (Pharmacology) from The Ohio State U., Columbus, Ohio, USA) is a registered pharmacist and has served in the Ministry of Health Malaysia as a Member of the Pharmacy Board, The Drug Control Authority, Medicine Advertisement Board and the Standing Committee on Traditional and Complementary Medicine. Currently she is also a member of the National Committee for Clinical Research. She also has training in doping control in sports. In IMU, Prof Yeoh is the Secretary of the IMU Joint Committee on Research & Ethics and the IMU Coordinator of eSciFund for MOSTI (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation). Prof Yeoh was previously Head of the Division of Chinese Medicine, School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students in the University including supervision of research projects. She also participates as internal examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate thesis and examinations. Prior to joining IMU Prof Yeoh was Professor of Pharmacology and Head of Department, University of Malaya and Founding Professor of Pharmacy and Head of Department, University of Malaya. 2 She has also served as External Examiner for the National University of Singapore, Melaka-Manipal MBBS programme and for master and PhD students in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa and Andhra University in India. She has reviewed manuscripts for publication for many journals; served as guest editor for Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, special issue on Cardiovascular diseases (March 2013). Her research interests are in the area of drug discovery with medicinal plants, pharmacy education and professionalism, Chinese medicine education and practice, neurotransmitters in experimental seizures and pharmacogenetics. She has published articles in journals and presented papers in scientific conferences in these areas. 3 Internationally, Prof Yeoh has participated in the review of WADA (World Anti-doping Agency) grants for research projects and was previously Malaysia’s representative to the International Brain Research Organisation (IBRO) for many years. She is a Council member of the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS), and was Chairperson of its “Grants & Awards” Committee for many years. She is also Council Member of the Academy of Pharmacy, and Secretary of Central Branch of the Alumni Association of King Edward VII College of Medicine and the Faculties of Medicine Universities of Malaya and Singapore. She is also a member of the Malaysian Society of Hypertension, life member of the Malaysian Society of Pharmacology and Physiology and the National Heart Association of Malaysia. Previously she has been Vice-President of the Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped. She received the MPS-GlaxoSminthKline Pharmacist of the Year Award in 2002 for her contribution to the pharmacy profession. In 2012 she was awarded the Alumni Gold Medal for her contribution to the Central Branch of the Alumni Association of The King Edward VII College of Medicine and the Faculties of Medicine, Universities of Malaya and Singapore.
