A Unique Programme in Public Health for All Healthcare Professionals

29 May 2019

The current practice of public health of the 21st century needs the collaborative contributions from a multidisciplinary team of professionals and health workers. With this in mind, the IMU has developed a unique programme, Master of Science in Public Health (MScPH), to cater to healthcare professionals from all walks of life. Our students both from Malaysia and many parts of the world are taught by a team of highly experienced academics and renowned public health leaders who passed on their knowledge through IMU unique learning model. The hands-on experience and real life scenarios that the students attained from this programme equipped them with a repertoire of knowledge and skills when they move on and work in different sectors of public health. Job readiness is one of the outstanding attributes that IMU MScPH programme prepares our students today. Many of our alumni are currently employed in various sectors of Public Health.

Obinna Francis Onunkwor (MScPH 2015) is currently a Monitoring and Supervision Consultant, I Plus Solution, Nigeria. Country of Origin: Nigeria
“The MScPH postgraduate degree from IMU is accepted and recognised globally. I developed research skills, presentation (public speaking), technical report writing and data analysis skills. These skills are essential in the development and humanitarian sector, and they are aided by career advancement. However, a key thing that gave me an edge in a very competitive and surplus work force in Nigeria, was the Internship at UNHCR Kuala Lumpur. It provided me the experience I needed to launch my career in a sector that hardly employs inexperienced graduates.”
Ng Ai Kah (MScPH 2013) is currently a Lecturer at International Medical University, Malaysia. Country of Origin: Malaysia
“The programme is really beneficial because it provides comprehensive scopes in term of the health systems and organisation, management and health economics. This has really prepared me by instilling an understanding of public health practice. I must say that I truly enjoy my lessons and my lecturers are very helpful, dedicated and experienced. I am grateful to be part of this programme and appreciate how it has facilitated my professional development as well as my current PhD project, which is related to public health nutrition among adolescents.” IMU Alumni shares their experience studying the University's MSc in Public Health programme.

Wong Yi Kai (Malaysia), Dauda Bukar Dauda (Nigeria) and Galila Esamamawi (Yemen) from MScPH 2017
We appreciated the elective attachments in the programme as the exposure has benefited us academically, socially and professionally. We were given the opportunity to present in international health promotion event, international conference and an NGO health camp. These were good collaborative and interprofessional learning where we were able to share values, and respect the roles of other healthcare professionals and the communities, as well as improving our cultural competence in practice. And the final note from these alumni of MScPH: All could not be made possible without the dynamic faculty from the Community Medicine Department of IMU who took us through this entire programme.
