Community Project at Ti-Ratana Promotes Healthy Eating and Mental Well-being

17 Jun 2021

The IMU Cares Help Ti-Ratana Residents Project 2021’s first visit with the theme “Eating Right with Fun” was conducted on 3 April 2021. Both female and male residents were involved in this project which was partly delayed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The activities included making healthy cookies demonstration (at the female side), music and dance therapy and lantern making competition specifically in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.

We also used music and dance as a therapeutic intervention to promote mental health well-being amongst the residents, as a continuation from what was done last year.

The aim of the activities were as follows:
Making Healthy cookies demonstration To provide knowledge to the cooks / residents and care givers on healthy cooking style, as well as to enable the residents /staff/ care givers a feeling of festival atmosphere to promote the  mental well-being of the residents.
Music and dance therapy To encourage and facilitate caregivers to participate in sing along session with the residents so that they will carry out this activity to promote mental well-being of the resident
Lantern Making competition This will be the nursing student’s community project. To enable Nursing Science students engage to conduct this activity as their community project. To involve the care givers to continue conducting handicraft activity at least once a month for the residents. The residents will be divided into groups and team-working will be encouraged during this activity. Prizes will be given according to team working spirit and creativity

The activities were chosen to reduce stress and fatigue, improve interaction and team building as well as  increase positive emotions.

The staff at Ti-Ratana had been practicing all activities taught in 2020 such as the daily exercise, thorough observation, and care of skin conditions as well as the singing therapy and they pledge to continue doing so. The residents enjoyed each activity they participated in which included a snack. The half day event ended with prize giving for the winners of the lantern making competition for both the male and female participants.

The whole programme was headed by Tan Seew Geek (Nursing) and Chang Woan Ching (Nursing).   All activities were carried out with adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures of the Movement Control Order.
