1 March 2014 – More than 100 International Medical University (IMU) students were present at the IMU Health Sciences Career Day which was held at its campus in Bukit Jalil. These students were from the Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biomedical Science, Medical Biotechnology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Psychology, and Nursing programmes. The IMU Health Sciences Career Day is an annual event organised by IMU for participating companies to network with IMU’s students. The day is also an opportunity for the students to talk to potential employers about the current job market and explore available job opportunities.
This year, 19 companies participated in this event. These companies include a medical centre, a hospital and many companies from the pharmaceutical industry. The 19 participating companies were Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad, BP Healthcare Group, CCM Chemicals Sdn Bhd, DKSH Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Eli Lilly, Glaxosmithkline Consumer Healthcare Sdn Bhd, Guardian Pharmacy, JobsCentral (M) Sdn Bhd, JobsDB Malaysia, JobStreet.com, Johnson & Johnson Sdn Bhd, Juzcare Pharmacy, Kotra Pharma (M) Sdn Bhd, Mahkota Medical Centre, Novo Nordisk Pharma (M) Sdn Bhd, Pantai & Gleneagles Hospitals, Pharmaniaga Berhad, Schmidt Biomedtech Sdn Bhd and Zenotec Pharma Sdn Bhd. This IMU Health Sciences Career Day gave students the opportunity to meet quality employers that are available. It was not just a job recruitment event for participating companies but it also provided an opportunity for it to enhance the organisation’s image amongst job seekers. The Career Day also helped IMU’s undergraduate students to gain insight into the variety of professions and diverse career paths available. It provided an opportunity for networking, enabling our students to meet one-on-one, seek career advice and explore future opportunities as interns or employees. Students from all semesters took this opportunity to find places for their electives and internships.
The IMU Health Sciences Career Day is held in conjunction with IMU Career Week which started on 24 Feb 2014 and ended with this Career Day exhibition on 1 March 2014. During the Career Week, talks were given during lunchtime (12:00 noon – 2:00pm) by speakers from Pfizer, Guardian Pharmacy, BP Healthcare Group, ScienceVision, Kotra Pharma, Pantai Management Resources, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Dietitian Association and also by lecturers from IMU. Many companies emphasised the importance of soft skills and a good attitude with 2-3 companies stating that it was more important than gaining a good CGPA. Many students from various health sciences programmes who attended the talk said that it gave them a better understanding and knowledge of future job prospects for their relevant courses, and also briefed them on what to expect in the work place as a health science professional. The Health Sciences Career Week proved to be a successful event. It also plays a role as an important forum for businesses and students to network and form crucial industry connections.
