IMU Chemistry Programmes Receive Accreditation from the Royal Society of Chemistry

11 Apr 2019

In 2014, the world’s leading chemistry community and professional body, the Royal Society of Chemistry accredited IMU’s 3-year BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme. In 2019, the BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme has been re-accredited. At the same time, the RSC has also accredited the Master of Science programme in Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (MAPC). Both programmes are offered by the School of Pharmacy, and RSC accreditation is testament to the international standards of these programmes. The RSC is committed to advancing excellence in the chemical sciences. Mr Toby Underwood, Accreditation Manager of the Royal Society of Chemistry said “The RSC is proud to accredit the degree programmes at the International Medical University. Since the first accreditation 5 years ago, we have carried out a number of engagement activities with staff and students and have always valued these interactions”. This achievement raises the visibility and recognition of both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and enhances graduand employability and prospects both in Malaysia and overseas. The accreditation continues to provide IMU students and academic staff access to resources and activities offered by the RSC, which includes webinar on career pathways and CV writing, as well as enhancement of exchange programmes between accredited universities and industrial partners.

The Pharmaceutical Chemistry degree, launched in 2008, is completed in three years, and is undertaken entirely at IMU. It is the first programme in Malaysia to provide comprehensive and specialised training in pharmaceutical chemistry. The curriculum begins with foundation sciences and extends to applied knowledge and skills associated with drug development. Research and workplace learning / internship are essential components. Graduates may undertake the graduate entry Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programmes at the University of Sydney and Curtin University, with exemptions from some units in these programmes. These Australian qualifications qualify for pharmacist registration training in Australia and Singapore, but not in Malaysia. The MAPC programme combines research with taught courses. On-campus learning is scheduled for weekends so that working learners can fit their learning around their work, and learners have the option of part-time enrolment. The Masters programme builds on the student’s undergraduate chemistry experience and provides specialised knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of modern analytical techniques. The programme also develops advanced knowledge and skills in pharmaceutical chemistry focusing on various aspects of drug discovery, design and development. Since the programme has a unique blend of both analytical and pharmaceutical chemistry disciplines, the student will have good opportunities for career progression and job prospects in a range of industries.
