Internship leads to Employment at a Global Healthcare Company

02 Feb 2018

IMU alumna, Michelle Too, graduated with her BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry from IMU in 2015 and is now working at Abbott Laboratories. Here, she relates to us her journey since she graduated. “In a blink of an eye, almost 2 years have passed since I graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from IMU. It was the end of a memorable chapter in my life and the beginning of another.

With the world changing as fast as it is, industries rising and evolving, it is ever so vital for the educational institutions to nurture and train their students so that they may maximize their potentials fully and IMU has done an excellent job in doing just that. My journey at IMU has indeed made me grow personally and professionally. The Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme has imparted tremendous knowledge in the chemistry field, both theory and practical.

The dedicated lecturers have also undeniably played an essential role in my studies. Without them I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today and for that I am forever grateful. Some of the lecturers at IMU have made such an impact in my life. Passionate and dedicated, they would always go the extra mile for their students. After my final semester I managed to secure my internship at Abbott Laboratories, an American worldwide healthcare and pharmaceuticals company. I was placed in the Established Pharmaceuticals Division and was involved in business development and regulatory affairs. Having such a memorable internship at Abbott, I really wanted to stay on and thankfully my prayer was answered! I was so blessed to be offered the position of New Business Development and Regulatory Executive where I play a role in expanding the company’s range of products as well as ensuring the company’s products comply with the regulations and guidelines of the local health authority. As with every job there are ups and downs. With the knowledge and soft skills acquired in IMU, I have been able to cope well in my job and perform my daily tasks to its best in order to achieve optimal results. Working at Abbott has thus far been such an amazing and memorable journey. Apart from all the valuable work experience gained, I’m glad to have met so many amazing people here, some of whom are like family to me. In Abbott, it feels like we’re one big family working together and supporting each other to achieve goals and I am very blessed to be a part of the Abbott family.”

Michelle’s advice to students would be, “The university can only guide and prepare you up to a certain level for the real working world. At the end of the day, I believe attitude trumps everything else. It is your attitude that will determine your altitude and how high or far you are willing to go.”

She believes that everyone has the potential for greatness and the potential to become the best of who they can be. “Along with the proper guidance and nurturing, I believe everyone has the potential to be the best that they can be. As I continue my journey into the working world, I will strive to give my best as the healthcare professional IMU has shaped me to be.”
