Enhancing Prosthodontic Patient Care with IMU’s Postgraduate Diploma in Prosthodontics

17 Apr 2024

IMU School of Dentistry is offering a 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in Prosthodontics (PGDPros), an Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) accredited programme which provides training in Prosthodontics for general dental practitioners. The primary objective of the IMU PGDPros Programme is to provide dental practitioners the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in providing patient-centred prosthodontic treatment. The training emphasises the provision of care based on current evidence and best practices utilising appropriate technologies and specialised techniques.

The programme is designed for full-time and part-time students, allowing for flexible learning at the students’ own pace and combining dedicated online modules with one week face to face teaching. There are also opportunities for multidisciplinary learning to enhance patient care using advanced digital technologies. Students will have free hand to utilise IMU’s digital dentistry facilities including Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) as well as Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM).

This programme includes 6 modules in 2 semesters with a total of 30 credit hours to be delivered over a period of 1 year. Duration of each module is approximately 6 weeks including 1 week of compulsory on-site activities.

The PGDPros Programme covers knowledge acquisition through face-to-face and online lectures, case-based discussion, skills development through hands-on training in the simulation lab, and clinical experience through patient care at the IMU Oral Health Centre and at the student’s own workplace.

By the end of the course, students will learn:

– Advanced diagnostics and prosthodontic patient care
– Treatment planning with digital tools such as intraoral scanning
– Implant-guided prosthodontics
– Management of compromised perio-prostho cases

And many more!

This course is the most structured and evidence-based course that I’ve attended. In this course, I get to relearn the basics and gain skills not only in the clinical portion but also the lab portion of prosthodontics.

The PGDPros course also pays attention to multidisciplinary treatments, touching topics on Perio, Resto, RCT, rubber dam isolation, dental operating microscopes, dental implants, digital dentistry, and many more.

This programme aims to produce graduates able to coordinate a multidisciplinary approach in managing oral healthcare and provide accessible and affordable prosthodontic care. Students are expected to be able to update their skills through lifelong learning and share their expertise with their peers.
