June 2019 – International Medical University has been successfully accredited to conduct the Food Handlers Training Programme (Kursus Latihan Pengendali Makanan, LPM) by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. This is a course that food operators are required to undergo in compliance with the Food Hygiene Regulations (Peraturan-Peraturan Kebersihan Makanan, PPKM) 2009. 
Strictly monitored by the Food Safety and Quality Division of the Ministry, the programme aims to provide exposure and awareness to all food operators on aspects of hygiene and safety of food, food handlers and food premises and, thus, to reduce the incidence of food poisoning throughout the country. “We are extremely pleased to receive this accreditation to conduct the Food Handlers Training Programme and to be one of the very few teaching institutions with this certification. Following the accreditation, we can now conduct this training for food handlers throughout the country”, said A/Prof Rokiah Binti Don, Coordinator of the programme. 
Since receiving the accreditation, two IMU lecturers, Dr Yang Wai Yew and Ng Ai Kah, who are certified trainers, have been conducting the training sessions at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil with the first training session conducted in March. Presently, 84 participants have attended the 3-hour training. The participants comprise undergraduate students, postgraduate students, teachers, entrepreneurs and food operators, including those who operate at Pandan Serai Café, a healthy cafeteria at the University. The 3-hour training not only shares about ways to handle food but also shares about the awareness and the importance on food hygiene and the food safety. Personal hygiene is also a focus. The Food Handlers Training Programme is one of the major services established in the Centre for Transformative Nutrition and Health initiated by the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics. This Centre aims to offer services which promote better nutrition and health to relevant stakeholders including those from the industry, healthcare professional groups and the community at large. This will also enhance the experiential learning of students from both the nutrition and dietetics programmes at IMU. Obtain more information via this brochure.
