Enhancing Elderly Well-Being for a Healthier Tomorrow

22 Mar 2024

On 6 January 2023, the BP121 cohort of IMU pharmacy students, as part of the programme’s Public Health Module Assignment, organised an event at Rumah Charis Elderly Home. The initiative included 15 participants, consisting of 11 students and 4 IMU staff members, with a focus on raising awareness about medication and oral care.

Lively Warm-up and Light Exercise Session

The event commenced at 9 am with a heartwarming start as participants engaged in a lively warm-up and light exercise session with the elderly residents. Enveloped in uplifting music, the gathering was aimed to uplift spirits and promote an atmosphere of joy. This engaging kickoff set the tone for a meaningful and interactive session ahead.

Medication Management Sessions

The students then smoothly transitioned into a dedicated medication documentation session. Each student was paired with an individual resident, shouldering the responsibility of comprehending the distinctive medical conditions and medications of their assigned elderly counterpart. This hands-on approach not only facilitated a deeper understanding of medication management for the students but also nurtured meaningful connections with the elderly residents.

Furthermore, residents were presented with the valuable option to consult with Dr Vasudeva and Dr Samah, the designated pharmacists. Those who expressed interest in obtaining personalised, medically verified advice on their medications had the unique opportunity to engage in one-on-one sessions with Dr Vasudeva. This specialised service was designed to cater to the specific health needs of each resident, ensuring a tailored and precise approach to medication guidance.

Oral Care Session

In another segment of the event, students took the initiative to present an informative oral care session, shedding light on the importance of dental health for the elderly residents. Through an engaging presentation, participants shared insights on proper oral hygiene practices, emphasizing the significance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

To enhance the learning experience, students also conducted a hands-on demonstration, showcasing the correct techniques for cleaning dentures. This practical demonstration aimed to empower the elderly residents with valuable knowledge and skills, promoting their overall well-being and encouraging the adoption of effective oral care practices. The interactive session fostered a collaborative atmosphere, allowing for shared learning and the promotion of positive health habits within the community.

The event reached its conclusion on a high note with an interactive session between the participants and the elderly residents. This concluding segment provided an opportunity for genuine connections, laughter, and shared moments of joy.

The overall success of the event was evident in the positive interactions, where the exchange of knowledge and care left a lasting impact on both the students and the residents. As a culmination of a day dedicated to health education, the participants proceeded to share a much-awaited lunch. The camaraderie built during the event, coupled with the valuable insights gained, underscored the success of the initiative in fostering a sense of community and well-being for all involved.
