IMU Medical Biotechnology’s Alumna Pursues her Postgraduate Studies in Pharmacology and Drug Discovery in UK

30 Aug 2019

Wan Nur Sarah, an alumna of the IMU BSc (Hons) Medical Biotechnology  is currently pursuing her postgraduate studies at Coventry University, United Kingdom. For her studies there, she chose to specialise in the field of pharmacology and drug discovery as she has always been wanted to bridge the gap between basic laboratory medical research and commercially-ready medical biotechnology that can be applied on patients. Three years ago, Wan Nur Sarah chose to pursue medical biotechnology because of her interest in biology and medical biotechnology is the area that is closest to her heart. “I personally enjoy business and I do see myself developing a career from that aspect in science. Hence, I would say Biotechnology is a good mix of both”. When she was unsure where to pursue her first degree, she was directed to IMU by medical doctor friends who are well aware of the good reputation that IMU has in the health sciences. The reason why she chose specifically medical biotechnology and not the general biotechnology is because this programme emphasises on the application of biotechnology in the aspects of healthcare, rather on other areas such as agriculture or industrial. She was glad that she has made the right choice as the medical biotechnology programme at IMU has prepared her well for her postgraduate studies in pharmacology and drug discovery.

When being asked about her learning experience at IMU, she replied “In terms of theoretical knowledge in general, I was able to follow it at a good pace and help was given (whenever needed) in an approachable manner which I truly found comforting as a student. Although I was overwhelmed with the amount of assignments given, I can definitely see the benefits now. In terms of practical sessions, many scientific disciplines were covered and through the continuous practice and support, the skills that I acquired during my undergraduate years at IMU is definitely transferrable to my current research project”.

She agrees that the curriculum has made her a more confident person, especially in public speaking and presentation as now she is able to convey her ideas freely. “My undergraduate studies in IMU has definitely brought the best out of me and most importantly, I am now able to translate the basic understanding in science to real work”.
