Alumni Share Memories and Celebrate University’s 30th Year at IMU’s Alumni Homecoming Dinner

19 Oct 2022

The theme for the night was mythical garden, and the atrium was transformed into a ground worthy of the wondrous creatures representing IMU sport houses. It was the perfect touch to welcome home the many familiar faces back to IMU. The Alumni Homecoming Dinner was an evening focused solely on welcoming home beloved Alumni near and far. It was a night filled with fond memories, laughter and warmth that was palpable.

The evening kicked off with a break-out session where Alumni had a chance to catch up with their respective schools and well missed lecturers. What fun they had exchanging stories and sharing snippets of the journey they have been on since they left IMU. They were then ushered to the Mei Ling Young Auditorium where attendees were welcomed by Alumni emcees, Dr Angela Tan and Dr Andrea Tan.

The lineup of entertainment began with an energetic performance by the IMU All Stars Cheerleaders who had us all marveling at their gravity defying stunts. Prof Dr Aziz Baba then graced the stage for an opening address where he warmly welcomed all our Alumni back home, back to where it all began. Just like a proud father, he congratulated all the Alumni for all they have achieved since they left IMU and encouraged them to continue pushing the envelope and keep flying the IMU flag high.

To acknowledge outstanding achievements of our beloved Alumni, the Young Alumnus Awards were handed out. The Young Alumnus Award was introduced in 2017 to recognise the contributions and achievements of IMU Alumni in the fields of professional leadership, academic achievements, contribution to the community and entrepreneurship and innovation.

The auditorium was soon filled with the soothing piano stylings of our very own Alumna, Tee Weng Yan followed by the very entertaining stand-up comedy set by Kavin Jay.

To amplify the feeling of nostalgia, an Alumni Homecoming Video was shared with the attendees. It was a delight for the Alumni as some of them spotted old friends and even themselves for years before.

Concluding the first part of the evening was a speech by Dr Aw Tsung Wai, President of Alumni Association. Dr Aw took the opportunity to thank all Alumni who took the time to come home and revel in wonderful memories of their time in IMU and shared his hope that the Alumni continue to foster relationships with one another to create a strong network locally and internationally.

Dinner was then served buffet style throughout the driveway all the way to the back court where Alumni enjoyed a hearty Malaysian spread. How Ming Tan served as emcee for the night and ensured entertainment continued in the form of various performances by the very talented IMU students and topped off with two rounds of eagerly awaited lucky draw.

As the night went on, the atmosphere was buzzing with beloved memories of before and brand-new memories in the making. It was a homecoming to remember especially in the face of the pandemic and all the challenges everyone had faced and overcome. The Alumni Homecoming Dinner was especially significant as it coincided with IMU’s 30th Anniversary and so 30 years of wonderful memories were fondly remembered together with the homecoming of our Alumni. It was a night truly worth celebrating and will definitely be remembered by all.
